Fire Protection

To sustain fire you need three ingredients: 1 Fuel, 2 Heat[external or self-generating], and 3 Oxygen.

Eliminating just one of these will extinguish the fire.

Saferwood products suppress all 3 of these ingredients:

  1. Fuel: An intumescing foam is produced, protecting the surface of the wood from the fire
  2. Heat: Intumescing foam insulates the wood, absorbing heat endothermically. Surface temperature drops below what is required for combustion.
  3. Oxygen: A non-combustible gas is generated to dilute the amount of oxygen in the air around the flame.

Durability/Preserving:

Western red cedar contains extractives which deliver excellent decay resistance properties, even in the outdoor environment. In addition, Michigan Tech has conducted a 5 year decay and insect resistance test in the ultra humid environment of Hilo, Hawaii.  While the final results have not been published, 4 year results indicate pine treated with Thermex-FR fire retardant exhibits enhanced durability.  The Thermex-FR treated pine has performed on the same level as Western Red Cedar, a species well known for its natural durability.

Ecology Features

FSC/SFI:

We have the responsibility to leave behind our forests, an invaluable treasure, to future generations by preventing indiscriminate logging and carefully managing harvesting practices. We follow strict harvest management and reforestation guidelines in order to protect our environment and ecosystems, allowing forests to naturally reestablish themselves. By using wood certified by FSC or SFI, SaferWood helps realize environmental sustainability.

Disposal Free:

Buildings made of SaferWood are eventually recycled to the earth. When exterior walls or roofs are replaced, old SaferWood materials can be disposed of just like any regular wood. Saferwood is a safe and environmentally friendly fire resistant product and has also been subjected to some of the most rigorous Japanese oral and skin tests and is considered a non-toxic, safe material by Japanese standards.

Low Impact to Environment

Wooden products are less impact to manufacture than other material. Also wood surpasses steel and concrete in energy efficiency through its qualities of thermal performance and heat conductivity.
